CANBERRA GRAMMAR SCHOOL GOES FULLY CO-EDUCATIONAL FROM PRE-SCHOOL TO YEAR 12
In October 2015, Canberra Grammar School announced a major step in the history of the School: to extend co-education from its early years (Pre-School to Year 2) to Year 12. After substantial consideration, the School Board took the unanimous decision to extend the co-educational offering, meaning in coming years that CGS will offer a much more diverse School life.
The School’s desire is to educate students as young leaders of the next generation, and therefore we recognise the realities of the world that students will inherit from us – a world that is global, technologically advanced, an rapidly changing in its educational, political, economic and social structures, and one that is led by talented, aspirational men and women working in a co-ed world.
The co-educational transition will begin with an intake of girls to Years 3, 4, 7 and 11 in 2017.
CGS will not be a boys school with some girls, but a School where boys and girls can learn and flourish together in an environment where they are equal citizens, each valued for their talents, personality and qualities that he or she bring to the School.
IF WE AIM TO EDUCATE OUR STUDENTS AS YOUNG LEADERS OF THE NEXT GENERATION, THEN WE MUST RECOGNISE THE REALITIES OF THE WORLD THAT THEY WILL INHERIT FROM US.
As is already central to the School’s purpose, the School will respect and nurture all students – boys and girls – as distinct individuals, seeking to inspire, support and celebrate the efforts of all in realising their intellectual, spiritual, cultural, social and physical aspirations. We will aim, as ever, for our young men and women to be intelligent, innovative and internationally-minded; to be confident, creative and compassionate young leaders of the future.
To learn about the transition to full co-education at CGS, you can read the letter to the community, ‘Boys and girls together for the future’, from the Head of School, Dr Justin Garrick.
