Outdoor Sculpture Festival set to return to heritage listed Canberra Grammar School
This year, as the CGS Gallery celebrates supporting young and emerging artists in our region for 25 years, Canberra Grammar School will once again host a significant Outdoor Sculpture Festival, which proved to be a great success at the inaugural festival in 2014.
This acclaimed month-long visual arts event will run from Tuesday 16 May to Saturday 18 June 2017. The main attraction, the ‘Sculpture on the Campus’, will be made up of submissions from professional artists from Canberra and the surrounding regions, with eligible works submitted being judged to win the 2017 CGS Harris Hobbs Outdoor Sculpture Prize of $10,000.
The CGS campus is an ideal venue to highlight the range of sculptural forms on display, as it sits amongst some of Canberra’s most beautiful gardens, with beautiful plantings and heritage listed buildings that and can accommodate and enhance a large variety of entries from the ephemeral to the monumental.
Canberra Grammar School’s Red Hill campus is enhanced by a number of permanent outdoor sculpture acquisitions which provide a stimulating and engaging place for the School and wider community to experience. These sculptures are funded from commissions from the sales of work from exhibitions in the CGS Gallery over the past 25 years.
The CGS Gallery supports the endeavours of a range of professional artists from our local, regional and international communities. CGS would like to invite the Canberra community and keen artists to submit entries for the Outdoor Sculpture Prize, and to visit the ‘Sculpture on the Campus’ display at the festival.
The winner of the 2017 CGS Harris Hobbs Outside Sculpture Prize, announced on Tuesday 17 May 2017, was Mr Peter Vandermark with ‘Conductor V’. The panel of judges consisted of Mr Neil Hobbs, Ms Karina Harris, Ms Deborah Clark (Senior Curator CMAG), Ms Denise Ferris (Head of ANU School of Art and Design).
