Years 11 to 12 Curriculum – NSW Higher School Certificate
Canberra Grammar School has long had an excellent reputation for academic success. The HSC offers students to study a rich and varied curriculum with an educational experience that prepares young adults to be intelligent, innovative and international in their outlook.
In an era that will be dominated by such challenges as rapid globalisation, environmental change and extraordinary technological advancement, our students must develop a critical capacity to analyse complex problems, a creativity to find solutions and have the confidence to lead, and the HSC prepares students to be ready for the world.
The HSC is awarded to students who successfully complete Years 11 and 12 in NSW. The HSC is an internationally recognised credential that provides a foundation for students entering tertiary study, vocational training or employment. In line with our vision, the HSC contains a powerful curriculum and clearly defined standards of achievement.
CGS is the only school located in the nation’s capital that offers the Higher School Certificate in Year 11 and 12. Learn more about the HSC on the NSW Education Standards Authority website.
Alternative Pathways Programme
Canberra Grammar School is pleased to offer a non-ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) alternative pathway to the Higher School Certificate. Our ‘Pathways’ Programme is a viable alternative to the traditional HSC . The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is the highest educational award in New South Wales schools. It is awarded to NSW students who have satisfactorily completed Years 11 and 12 at secondary school. Students will receive their Higher School Certificate but will not be eligible for an ATAR and university entrance (with the exception of completing Board Developed and some VET courses, known as Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) VET courses, which can count towards an ATAR).
We are offering a variety of Content Endorsed Courses, including VET, which are endorsed by the NSW Education Standards Authority (previously known as the NSW Board of Studies). These courses cater for a wide candidature in areas of specific needs not served by Board Developed Courses. Content Endorsed Courses, when completed as HSC courses, are not externally examined and have an un-moderated school assessment mark recorded on the Higher School Certificate Record of Achievement.
Where students have completed the requirements for the Higher School Certificate, satisfactory completion of an HSC VET (Vocational Education and Training) course is reported on the Higher School Certificate credentials. The course is listed on the HSC Record of Achievement together with the HSC unit credit value. No mark is reported.
The following subjects are available with a combination of the above HSC courses:
- English Studies
- Maths General 1
- Work Studies
- Entertainment VET
- Sport Lifestyle and Recreation
- Photography and Video Editing
