The Curriculum Year 7 to Year 10
Canberra Grammar School caters to a diverse range of learners. Our curriculum and our approaches to learning and teaching are informed by our aspiration that students be intelligent, innovative and international in their approach to life. In an era that will be dominated by such challenges as rapid globalisation, environmental change and extraordinary technological advancement, our students will need the curiosity to research information , the critical capacity to analyse complex problems a, the creativity to find solution and the confidence to lead.
Canberra Grammar School offers a varied curriculum to all learners that is both appropriate to meeting these needs and vibrant in its offerings.
We follow the Australian Curriculum and the ACT Every chance to learn curriculum framework. The School has fully implemented the Australian Curriculum Version 7.5 (and are moving towards Version 8.0) for available core subject offerings and other learning areas still being developed in the Australian Curriculum will continue to be taught from the ACT Curriculum Framework until the Australian Curriculum for these learning areas is progressively completed.
We offer compulsory study in:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
- Geography/History (Semester courses); and
- Religious and Values Educations (RaVE).
In Year 7 and 8 the students are provided with a mixture of breadth and depth across their subjects.
YEAR 7
The Year 7 programme caters for all Key Learning Areas and provides a strong foundation for future learning. In addition to the compulsory subjects, the Year 7 programme includes compulsory offerings of French and Chinese language studies. Students also study a comprehensive offering of the Creative and Performing Arts subjects: Music, Drama, Visual Arts, Design and Technology
YEAR 8
The Year 8 programme builds on this underpinning by including a compulsory choice of one language study (French, Chinese, German or Latin) with an additional choice of two electives from Languages, Commerce, Design Technology, Drama, Music, Visual Arts and Asian Studies. Year 8 students are thereby given the option of continuing to study up to two languages plus an extra elective if they choose to.
YEAR 9 & 10
In the Year 9 and 10 programme students have a choice of two electives from a wide variety of subjects such as Languages (French, Chinese, German, Latin), Creative and Performing Arts, Information and Software Technology, Design and Technology, Visual Arts, Drama, Film, Music, Commerce, Asian Studies, Agriculture, and in Year 10 only, Physical Activity and Sports Studies.
Canberra Grammar School caters for mixed abilities and ensures that all students with additional needs are able to participate in the Australian Curriculum on the same basis as their peers through rigorous, meaningful and dignified learning programmes. The curriculum provides teachers with flexibility to cater for student diversity through personalised learning as well as access to learning development and enrichment programmes. Outside of the classroom environment, students may participate in enrichment activities such as Da Vinci, debating, chess speaking competitions, Code Cadets and maths and science challenges.
