Cultural Support

BUILDING CONNECTIONS, HONOURING CULTURE

We actively engage with a range of individuals and organisations to create a strong support network for our Indigenous students throughout their journey at the School. From meaningful connections with our local community Elders to collaborations with key organisations, we foster cultural engagement through traditional smoking ceremonies and Indigenous celebrations. These experiences help strengthen their sense of identity, belonging, and connection to community.

Indigenous Programme Coordinator

Our Indigenous Programme Coordinator is an on-site resource dedicated to providing Indigenous students with a safe space to connect, chat, and discuss any concerns or challenges they may be facing. This role is crucial to the success of the programme and ensures a culturally safe environment for students. The Coordinator helps foster a community where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can engage with other students, staff, and alumni, promoting support, belonging, and cultural connection.

Aunty Violet Sheridan

Aunty Violet Sheridan is a highly respected pillar of the Canberra and regional community, playing an integral role in the life and culture of our School. As a passionate Ngunnawal Elder, she generously shares her cultural knowledge and expertise with our students and wider community. Aunty Violet’s wisdom and guidance have been instrumental in significant ceremonies, including openings and inaugurations at the School. She serves as a vital link to the Ngunnawal community and is a cornerstone of the cultural support system we proudly provide.

DUNCAN & JAKIDA

Duncan Smith, born in Wiradjuri country, Wellington NSW, is a Canberra icon known for his immersive cultural sessions. Together with his daughter Jakida, he shares traditional knowledge through art, song, dance, storytelling, and language. A much-loved presence within our School, Duncan engages with students across both Primary and Senior years, enriching their understanding of Indigenous culture. He and Jakida have led numerous smoking ceremonies at major school events and celebrations, playing a vital role in preserving and sharing cultural traditions. They have become valued members of our community, whom we often turn to for guidance, education, and cultural connection.
