CELEBRATING INDIGENOUS CULTURE THROUGH SPORTS & THE ARTS

Our sports and co-curricular programmes provide another valuable avenue for incorporating and celebrating Indigenous culture within the school community.

One of the most anticipated sporting activities in our events calendar  is our Indigenous Rugby Round, which honours and celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage through sport. This special round not only highlights the contributions of Indigenous athletes but also fosters a deeper appreciation and respect for Indigenous culture among players and supporters alike.

Beyond sport, the School’s Music and the Arts programmes offer numerous opportunities to showcase Indigenous culture. From musical performances featuring traditional and contemporary Indigenous music to visual art projects that highlight Indigenous storytelling and symbolism, these creative outlets provide meaningful ways for students to engage with and learn from Indigenous perspectives.

Through these initiatives, we continue to celebrate the richness of Indigenous culture, ensuring it is woven into the fabric of school life in a way that is both meaningful and enduring.

Indigenous Rugby Round

Now a fixture at our major school celebrations, including Alumni reunions and National Reconciliation Week, these sessions are often marked by commemorative jerseys or a smoking ceremony, honouring tradition and fostering cultural connection.

Indigenous Art

Indigenous art is deeply valued and appreciated at Canberra Grammar School, extending far beyond the visual displays around the campus. It is a part of the school’s curriculum, activities, and community engagement, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Students have the opportunity to engage directly with Indigenous artists, learning about the significance of traditional and contemporary Indigenous art forms.  Whether through murals, digital media, or hands-on creative projects, Indigenous artistry continues to inspire build connections to First Nations heritage.

Indigenous Music & Poetry

Indigenous music and poetry provide another powerful avenue for the school to proudly showcase First Nations heritage and culture. The Music Department and music students, in collaboration with Elders and Indigenous composers, have commissioned iconic pieces that are often performed at ceremonies as part of the Welcome to Country. These compositions reflect the deep cultural traditions and storytelling of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, creating a meaningful connection between music, identity, and heritage.

Additionally, the School’s music programme actively incorporates music and compositions by Indigenous artists, teaching students about the powerful meanings and stories embedded within these works. Through this, students gain a deeper appreciation of Indigenous music, understanding its role in preserving history, expressing identity, and fostering reconciliation.
