COMMITMENT TO INDIGENOUS EDUCATION & RECONCILIATION

The School integrates Indigenous perspectives across all year levels, with dedicated lessons leading up to Sorry Day and Reconciliation Day, ensuring students develop a deep respect for First Nations heritage.

Key initiatives include the Reconciliation Assembly, NAIDOC Week celebrations, smoking ceremonies, and collaborations with Indigenous artists. Together, these efforts provide meaningful, age-appropriate learning experiences that honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Looking ahead, the School remains dedicated to expanding its Indigenous education framework, ensuring reconciliation remains a lifelong commitment for students.

Bush Tucker Garden

The creation of the Bush Tucker Garden at the CGS Northside campus in 2021 is a collaborative effort between the School and the Parents and Friends (P&F) community. This project aligns with the launch of the Canberra Grammar School Reconciliation Action Plan and serves as a tangible reflection of the School’s commitment to Indigenous culture and education. The garden is a beautiful, serene space where students can connect with nature and learn about the land’s significance and Indigenous heritage. It is designed not only as a place of peace and reflection but also as a learning tool for all students, offering hands-on experiences with native plants and bush tucker. Indigenous experts frequently visit to share their knowledge, deepening students’ understanding of traditional food sources and the cultural importance of the land. This garden serves as an important resource, fostering a deeper respect for First Nations knowledge and the environment.

Bush Walks

At Canberra Grammar School, bush walks are an integral part of the primary school experience, offering students a chance to connect with the natural environment and learn about the land in a meaningful way. These walks are not only an opportunity to explore the beautiful surrounds of the campus but also serve as a chance to introduce students to the importance of Indigenous land knowledge. Guided by experts or teachers, the walks offer insights into native plants, animals, and ecosystems, as well as the traditional uses of the land by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Aboriginal Studies

Aboriginal Studies offers students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, history, and contributions. Through dedicated lessons, guest speakers, cultural immersion experiences & excursions, students explore the rich heritage and complex history of Indigenous peoples.
