Work Experience Programme

Grow their skills, shape their futures

As a valued member of the CGS Alumni community, you have a unique opportunity to support the next generation by getting involved in the School’s Work Experience Programme. You can offer short-term opportunities that provide students with invaluable insights into the day-to-day workings of an organisation and the industry in general. It is a meaningful way for you to stay connected with the School, while helping students explore their passions and pathways through real-world exposure.

The Details

Students in Years 10 – 12 opt into the Programme. Placements are between three and five days to allow students the opportunity for a range of experiences in the organisation. They may watch others perform a role, get hands-on experience, or both, depending on what the host employer is willing and able to provide. While there is a time commitment from the host employer, the experience is highly rewarding for all involved.

Areas of Interest

Some of the industries in which students are currently seeking Work Experience are:

  • Allied Health
  • Business
  • Construction
  • Engineering
  • Fashion
  • Finance
  • Information Technology
  • Law
  • Medicine
  • Music

However, Work Experience is all about exploring the wider options available (which many students are simply unaware of) in order for them to make more informed choices. We are aiming to offer opportunities in a broad range of fields and specialisations, so if your role does not fit in one of the categories above, we would still love to hear from you!

Expressions of Interest Form

Please indicate your interest by completing an Expression of Interest. This form will ask if you would like to be involved in other careers events and opportunities in addition to hosting a work experience student.

Your contact details will be added to the list held by the Careers staff. Students interested in Work Experience have a conversation about their interests with the Careers staff and if there is a match, your contact details are provided. This ensure a fair distribution of requests to employers.

As building independence is part of the process, students are expected to make contact with the employer themselves to propose their suitability and negotiate dates. There is no obligation to accept the request, but if you are happy to take on the placement, then there is an easy online agreement for employers, parents, students and the school to complete which provides insurance to all parties for the experience.

STORIES FROM RECENT PLACEMENTS

Jessica Fisher and Freddy Gaffey

Jessica and Freddy shared their experiences with the Year 10 students at their Careers Day.

In a follow-up survey, approximately 80% of students were interested in investigating further opportunities.

“I was originally looking into mechanical engineering but now having done work experience I’m more interested in mechatronics.” – Freddy Gaffey

“I had thought maybe I would be doing the stereotypical tasks like photocopying and getting coffee on work experience, but they made sure I got to see many aspects of the job and made it really interesting by giving me actual tasks they were doing and teaching me some new skills in the process.” – Jessica Fisher

Finley Webber

“The best thing about work experience was learning more about the day-to-day of the office environment and how everyone plays a critical role to the success of a business.

I would recommend work experience because it provides great references and it can be really beneficial to learn how to apply your skills practically.” – Finley Webber

Kalp Pandaya

“The best thing about work experience was my learning in different fields of an accounting firm from main productions functions to marketing within a big commercial accounting firm.

One challenge from the placement was adapting to the work environments there. I would recommend work experience or a placement because it allows young people to experience hand on the fields they may have interests in.” – Kalp Pandaya
