Canberra Grammar School offers a range of Foundation Scholarships for entry into Year 7, recognising exceptional ability and potential in both academics and music.

 

The CGS Foundation Scholarship for Academic Excellence celebrates students who demonstrate outstanding intellectual curiosity, academic achievement, and a commitment to learning.

The CGS Foundation Scholarship for Musical Excellence supports talented young musicians who show remarkable skill, dedication, and a passion for performance and ensemble participation.

These scholarships reflect the School’s commitment to nurturing excellence and providing opportunities for students to thrive in a dynamic and supportive environment.

CGS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

The Year 7 CGS Foundation Scholarship for Academic Excellence

Canberra Grammar School awards up to four CGS Foundation Scholarships for Academic Excellence to prospective or current CGS students entering Year 7. At least two Scholarships for Academic Excellence may be awarded to external applicants.

The CGS Foundation Scholarship for Academic Excellence is awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding academic merit in the Scholarship Examination.

Scholarship Eligibility and Application Requirements:

  • Applicants must be in Year 5, or the academic equivalent, at the time of application and exam
  • Applicants must submit a complete application with payment and all requested documents; and
  • Applicants must participate in the academic exam.

Scholarship Obligations:

  • Scholars must achieve a high Academic Progress Grade in their studies each semester
  • Scholars must maintain satisfactory conduct and effort which will be reviewed annually for the duration of the Scholarship; and
  • Scholars must be prepared to mentor the younger Scholars of the School to help them reach their potential.

Scholarship Entitlements:

  • Recognition as a CGS Scholar from the commencement of Year 7 and subsequent graduation from Year 12
  • A remission of 20% of tuition fees for the duration of the student’s enrolment at Canberra Grammar School from Year 7 to Year 12; and
  • The exemption from payment of the School Renewal Charge for prospective students is requested on acceptance of an offer to attend the School.

Scholarship Exclusions and Limitations:

  • Scholarship fee remission applies to tuition fees only
  • It is only possible to receive one Scholarship tuition fee remission during the student’s enrolment; and
  • Full Fee-Paying Overseas Students (FFPOS) will only be entitled to a remission on a portion of the tuition fees as determined by the Business Office.

CGS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP FOR MUSICAL EXCELLENCE

The Year 7 CGS Foundation Scholarship for Musical Excellence

Canberra Grammar School awards one CGS Foundation Scholarship for Musical Excellence to a prospective or current CGS student entering Year 7.

The CGS Foundation Scholarship for Musical Excellence is awarded to a student who demonstrates an outstanding musical ability.

Scholarship Eligibility and Application Requirements:

    • Applicants must be in Year 5, or the academic equivalent, at the time of application, exam and audition
    • Applicants must submit a complete application with payment and all requested documents
    • Applicants must apply for the CGS Foundation Scholarship for Academic Excellence as a minimum requirement
    • Applicants must participate in the academic exam and attend an audition; and
    • Applicants must have achieved a minimum instrumental standard of 6th Grade AMEB or the equivalent at the time of application.

    Scholarship Obligations:

      • Scholars must achieve a high Academic Progress Grade in their studies each semester
      • Scholars must maintain satisfactory conduct and effort which will be reviewed annually for the duration of the Scholarship
      • Scholars must be prepared to mentor the younger Scholars of the School to help them reach their potential
      • Scholars must be committed to participating in CGS Music Co-curricular Programmes including at least one CGS Instrumental Ensemble and one CGS Choir
      • Scholars must undertake music lessons either at the School or externally as approved by the Director of Music; and
      • Scholars must enrol in Music elective subjects for the duration of their enrolment at Canberra Grammar School from Year 8 to Year 12.

        REQUIREMENTS & TIMELINE

        Year 7 CGS Foundation Scholarships

        Applications for the 2027 Year 7 CGS Foundation Scholarships for Academic Excellence and the CGS Foundation Scholarship for Musical Excellence are now open.

        Applications for remote and overseas students close on Sunday, 9 November 2025.

        Applications for all students (except remote and overseas students) close on Sunday, 16 November 2025.

        All CGS Foundation Scholarship applicants will sit an examination on Thursday, 20 November 2025, at Canberra Grammar School – Senior School Campus.

        Applicants who are not awarded a Year 7 CGS Foundation Scholarship but whose academic examination performance ranks them in the top 25% of external applicants will be given priority enrolment to Year 7 upon application to the School. This priority is not transferrable to other years of entry and is subject to satisfying the entry criteria and application procedures outlined in the School’s Admissions Policy.

        Canberra Grammar School engages an external company, Academic Assessment Services (AAS), to facilitate all scholarship examinations to ensure transparency and fairness. CGS Scholarships may not be awarded entirely at the School’s discretion if no suitable applicant is identified.

        2027 Year 7 CGS Foundation Scholarships – Key Dates
        Week 6, Term 3 – Monday 28 July 2025
        • Applications for the 2027 Year 7 CGS Foundation Scholarships open.
        Week 4, Term 4 – Sunday 9 November 2025
        • Remote and overseas applications close.
        Week 5, Term 4 – Sunday 16 November 2025
        • Applications close; and
        • No further applications can be accepted after this date.
        Week 6, Term 4 – Thursday 20 November 2025
        • Scholarship examination held at CGS – Senior School Campus; and
        • Candidates shortlisted for the CGS Foundation Scholarship for Musical Excellence will be contacted for an audition.

        Please note that not all candidates will be successful in obtaining an audition.

        From Week 7, Term 4 – Monday 24 November 2025
        • Auditions are held for the CGS Foundation Scholarship for Musical Excellence.
        From Week 8, Term 4 – Monday 1 December 2025

         

        Please note: Friday, 6 December is the final day of Term 4 for CGS students.

        • Exam results are provided to CGS by Academic Assessment Services a minimum of 10 business days after the exam day
        • Applications, exam results and music audition results are reviewed by the Director of Educational Opportunity and relevant CGS Staff; and
        • Shortlisted applications are reviewed by the Head of School and Head of Senior School.
        From Monday, 8 December 2025
        • 2027 Year 7 CGS Foundation Scholarships for Academic Excellence and Musical Excellence are awarded, and successful candidates are notified; and
        • Applicants will be informed if their application has been unsuccessful.
