WHY CGS?

Approaching our centenary in 2029, Canberra Grammar School stands as one of Australia’s leading independent co-educational schools, uniting nearly 100 years of tradition with a bold vision for the future.

As an Anglican day and boarding school for students from Pre-School to Year 12, we believe that a co-educational environment best prepares young people for the world beyond school where collaboration, equality, and respect are fundamental to success.

Our inclusive and globally minded community brings together students from more than 40 nations to learn, live and grow with purpose. Set on a magnificent campus in Canberra’s inner south, CGS offers exceptional academic, co-curricular and pastoral opportunities that inspire curiosity, creativity, confidence and compassion in every student preparing them to thrive as citizens of the world.

OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL

From 3-year-old Preschool to Year 6, our Primary School provides a connected learning journey built on strong, respectful relationships, high expectations and a global outlook. Between our two campuses in Red Hill and Campbell, every student is known, challenged and supported to find their place in the world.

YEARS 11 & 12

The final two years at Canberra Grammar School give students the opportunity to shape their education around their strengths and ambitions. With a choice of the IB Diploma Programme, NSW Higher School Certificate or IB Career-related Programme, students pursue a pathway that suits them. Close teacher relationships and individual guidance support their progress, while a rich co-curricular programme and connected House community help them make the most of their final school years.

‘Why?’ ‘Why?’ ‘Why?’ ‘Why?’…

Many adults know the feeling. A child asks the question. Another follows. Then another. But rewind to your own childhood, when ‘Why?’ was a magical key. Turn it in enough locks and doors open to whole new worlds.

That spirit filled our Primary School during the PYP Walk, a two-day exhibition under the theme ‘Conceptual Learning: Where Ideas Take Flight’.

In all, 4,200 artefacts were created throughout the year by students from Pre-School to Year 6. There were hand-made birds of clay, landscapes capturing the six seasons of the Ngunnawal people, poems about self-identity, and even a blueprint for a device to change the movement of tectonic plates. Brilliant!

But none of these pieces stood alone. Through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, students build connections between subjects and explore ideas through different perspectives. At the entrance to JLH, student paintings of butterflies virtually glowed from wall to wall. Each contribution a thoroughly researched symbol of migration.

In a twinkling tunnel of fairy lights, an adult remarked, ‘I wish I had all this when I was their age.’ At the tunnel’s end sat a cardboard star, a child’s words crowded between its points: ‘Did you know that the universe never ends?’

There is always another question, and we keenly encourage it. Thank you to all of our wonderful students, staff, and inevitably parents, for all the hard work put into this years exhibition.

This World Teachers’ Day, we’re shining a light on all that our teachers are.
The expertise they share is backed by years of study and experience. Their interests and talents give students something to connect with, and their willingness to get involved makes school a place worth remembering.
These photos capture just some of what our teachers bring to Canberra Grammar School every day. Their influence stays with students long after they leave.
To all our teachers: thank you for giving so much of yourselves to the work you do. Happy World Teachers’ Day.

Some photographs deserve a moment of their own. These beautiful images from our students’ Duke of Ed Adventurous Journey in the Whitsundays certainly qualify.

With water like that, you could be forgiven for thinking the itinerary was entirely leisure. There was, however, plenty of learning behind those views.

The Adventurous Journey asks students to take responsibility for a shared goal, working through challenges in an unfamiliar environment. It means making decisions together and recognising when someone needs a hand. Confidence grows through experience, as students discover what they can contribute and how much they can rely on one another.

A spectacular setting for lessons you have to live to learn.

There is nothing mor

There is nothing more powerful than the imagination. Indeed, it is the ultimate traveller. There is nowhere it can’t go, and nothing it can’t experience. Australia’s international best-selling author, Markus Zusak, has made a career of travelling between his ears and inviting the rest of us on extraordinary journeys through times and places. Now, as part of the CGS Author Spotlight Series, he is coming to speak with the Canberra Grammar School community.

Markus is the author of six novels, including The Messenger, Bridge of Clay and The Book Thief – one of the most loved books of the twenty-first century and a New York Times bestseller for more than a decade. His books have been adapted into film, television and theatre, and translated into more than fifty languages – and have been awarded numerous honours around the world, ranging from literary prizes to bookseller and readers’ choice awards.

This rare opportunity to hear from one of our most renowned storytellers will take place on Thursday 12 November from 5:00pm to 6:30pm, and is free for all members of the CGS community – including staff, students and families.

Free to attend but please register so we know to expect you.
This is event is supported by the CGS Parent & Friends Association.
