This is the fork in the road.

Year 10 is when it stops being hypothetical. Which subjects. Which pathway. Which version of the next two years. It’s a big call, and it should fit you, not the other way around. At Canberra Grammar School, you don’t squeeze yourself into a single path. You choose the one that fits and you’re supported every step after that.

Three pathways, one genuine choice.

Most schools hand you one pathway and ask you to make it work. Here, you’ll have the choice of three.

IB Diploma Programme

For the broad thinker. Centred around inquiry-based learning. Six subject areas plus the core, studied with real depth and a global lens. Recognised by universities the world over.

NSW Higher School Certificate

For the student who prefers a more linear style of learning. Flexible subject choice, extension courses and applied options. CGS is the only school in the ACT that offers it, and it leads to a strong, structured route into Australian universities.

IB Career-related Programme

For the student with a direction in mind who wants a head start on that career. Academic study braided with practical, career-connected learning. It leads to university, further training, or straight into a field with real experience behind you.

Our Academic Office is here to guide you to the right pathway for you.

LEARN IN SPACES THAT INSPIRE

We are blessed with stunning historic grounds and gardens that sit alongside impressive new buildings like The Snow Centre, Tim Murray Theatre and the world-class Snow Concert Hall. Six ovals, eight tennis courts, a heated pool. And the only boarding offering in the ACT for boys and girls.

Here, you’re not a roll number.

From the day you arrive, you belong to a house. Around you, a Head Student of House, tutors and student leaders who notice when you’re flying and when you’re not. Older students look out for younger ones. It’s how a big school stays small. And behind the houses sits a full net of support: chaplains, school psychologists, careers advisers, the Individual Leaning Department and an on-site health clinic.

Serious about the work. Just as serious about you.

The academic bar here is high. The support underneath it is higher. Small tutor groups. Teachers who know your name and your goals. Academic conferences where you set the targets and we help you hit them. Extension when you’re ready to stretch, and a hand when you need one.

A vibrant culture. A fulfilling reality.

Marks matter. So does everything else.

Our co-curricular programme is overseen by a three-time Olympian. We don’t see co-curricular as an ‘add on.’ We take this stuff seriously. This is a school where you can row on the lake before the first bell and be on stage that night. Where the sports list runs from rugby and rowing to dragon boating and equestrian, and where the school musical fills a theatre. Whatever you’re into, and whatever you didn’t know you were into yet, there more of it here than you’ll find anywhere else in Canberra.

How our students show up

There’s a kind of learning that never appears on a transcript. Some of the most important of it here happens when students decide to do something for someone else. Service isn’t a box the school ticks. It’s students picking the causes that matter to them, running the events and pulling the entire community in behind them.

In 2026, our students raised $70,000 for Shave for Cancer. At Pink Round, the sidelines turned pink with socks and caps and cupcakes raising $11,000 raised for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. CGS students leave knowing that showing up for other people isn’t a chore or a credit. It’s just what you do.

A community for now, a network for life.

Your time at CGS doesn’t end on the day of graduation. Students from more than 40 nations. Day students and boarding students from across Australia and the globe. The friendships you make here are the durable kind. Our Alumni community keeps former students connected for life through reunions and a dedicated portal, and includes chapters in London, Hong Kong and Singapore.
